Water For Water chat with Brad Eastman

http://waterforwater.com.au/images/larger_end.png
by Water For Water - Thursday, July 21, 2011
weAREtheIMAGEmakers is bringing 12×12 back to Sydney’s aMBUSH Gallery with a whole new lineup of artists from all over Australia.
The show, curated by the ever amazing Brad Eastman is on at aMBUSH Gallery. We sat down with Brad Eastman for 5 minutes to chat about the 12x12 show which open's Friday 22 July, 6-9pm and exhibition continues to 31 July, 12-4pm daily)

Firstly, for those who aren’t aware of the format of the show, can you tell us what it's about?
The 12x12 Exhibition is a group show featuring 12 Australian artists, and each artist produces 12 pieces each,
with each piece restricted to a size of 12x12 inches.

Why 12x12?
12x12 inches is a very common size of painting, and its square format makes the 12 works very open to many different layout options for the exhibition.
The 12x12 format also allows the artists to make smaller works that are therefore more affordable to their fans, so the exhibition is a great opportunity to purchase a piece of artwork from some of Australia's best emerging artists at an affordable price.

What's your selection process for the artists?
The show is about promoting and giving exposure to emerging Australian artists, so I select and invite artists from all over the country that represent different locations, backgrounds and artistic styles. I also like to invite some well known established artists to show alongside more unknown emerging artists, therefore giving those lesser known artists a chance to shine next to their peers.

This is the 4th 12x12 show you have curated, so which artist has been your favourite so far?
Thats a tough question, I dont think I could choose just one. Some of favourites in the past have included Phibs, Max Berry, Meggs, Trent Whitehead and Jae Copp. This year I'm really excited to have Rone, Shida, Drewfunk and Sean Morris involved, it's going to be a really impressive exhibition.

Thanks to Brad for taking time out of his busy schedule to chat to Water For Water and for also asking Water For Water to be involved.

The show open's tomorrow night, there will be some great art on show and some Water For Water to drink (as well as some beer & cider) so forget about the rain and come down and check it out...

Brad let us have a sneak peak at some pieces of art in the show -  (Shida & Rone)

Growing up in the Philippines...

http://waterforwater.com.au/images/larger_end.png
by Water For Water - Friday, December 10, 2010

I don’t know about you but my childhood memories revolve around water. Running through the sprinklers on a hot day, trips to the beach and a lot of sweltering afternoons in suburban swimming pools. MARIAM is an arts worker who grew up in the Philippines before migrating to Australia. We had a chat to Mariam about her chilhood memories.

CHILDHOOD.
From age 4 to 13 I lived in Manila and Mandaluyong. In the neighbourhood I lived in there was crime, homelessness and poverty, so keeping your wits about you was a part of life.  People also got sick a lot due to contaminated water, so my family were always careful when drinking water at school, at other people’s houses, at restaurants. Basically, safe water meant warm water.

CLEAN WATER.
From an early age I got used to the idea that drinking safe water meant boiling it first. Water-related diseases were common, and sometimes you would see hints of bacteria floating in the water.Vegetables and fruits needed to be washed with hot water, you brushed your teeth with heated water and if you wanted to drink iced water (which is the tendency with Filipino weather) your ice cubes would need to be heated before freezing.

AUSTRALIA.

I was amazed at the privilege Australians have with their water supply! For so many years I was brought up to heat my water, to shower with pails and buckets, to conserve water, conserve water, conserve water! Then I migrated to Australia in 1996, and I didn’t have to do any of these things anymore. I could just put a glass underneath a tap and drink it straight away. The tap water was so clear, and naturally cold! I could launder my clothes in these machines, I could take regular showers and swim in pools.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT?

I believe people need to spare a thought for third world countries whose health and lifestyle suffer regularly because they do not share the same privileges. As capable, courteous human beings, we need to do whatever we can to help, even if it's through spreading awareness, donating to causes, and supporting products that are devoted to making a difference. So often people forget about the predicaments of our Asian neighbours simply because they are ‘out of sight, out of mind.' But the issue of water contamination is real, and people do die from drinking infected water, or not having proper access to sanitised water.

We in Australia are definitely in a position where we can make a difference, and I'm a big believer that even one individual can make an impact.

Give A Trunk

http://waterforwater.com.au/images/larger_end.png
by Water For Water - Friday, May 21, 2010

On the 18th February 2010, Water For Water was fortunate enough to be apart of Give A Trunk at Monster Children Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Give A Trunk was a collaboration between 10 selected Australian Artists and surf wear label Rhythm. Each artist donated a piece of work that was transformed onto Rhythm board shorts and auctioned with the original piece included. All proceeds from the night went to the Artist’s cause of choice and the event raised over $5,000.

We would like to thank local Sydney based artist Beastman for choosing Water For Water as his cause.

Stay tuned for our next event!
